Oct 4, 2007Twenty-three Rotarians and guests were present for this very special meeting in which Norma Henderson expressed a thank you for a Rotarian good deed done 50 years ago. In doing research for a “this is your life” presentation of an award to Norma for her work with the AAUW, Michael researched to discover the name of the individual and group who provided the funds that  paid for surgery on Norma’s seriously burned hands.  Without the surgery, the tendons in her hands were not growing.  Norma had been burned by touching a kerosene heater in 1940 when she was one year old. When she was five, a school nurse (Helen Fletcher) got her to Dr. Bush, newly arrived at GMC.  Palmer R.Garmen, a Rotarian, acquainted the Club with Norma’s situation.  Funding was provided surgery at GMC, successful on one of her hands, and a year later another surgery at Allentown. Norma has a memory from when she was 8 or so of being at the Club for a meeting.  Norma was born in 1939, and was one of 8 children, living in a home without electricity. Her early jobs were as a typist and would not have been possible had the hand surgery not been provided and successful. The Henderson’s now live in California.  Also present at the meeting was the Assistant DG and head of PR, Loretta Coltrane, and Clive and Charlotte Ferry, Norma’s brother and sister in law.
