This Week: September 4, 2008 – New Member Classification/Vocational talk will be presented by Dr. Donald Trapp.  SVCC, 11:45 a.m.

August 28, 2008 – Thirty-five Rotarians and guests were present for this very special program featuring Henrietta Loub, Professor of History at Unisia University in South Africa.  This international program was arranged for and hosted by Professor Loub’s friend, Rotarian Leo Mendonca.  Professor Loub shared pictures and insights about the changes that have occurred in South Africa since 1994 and as the country celebrates the 90th birthday of Nelson Mandela. Pictures of Pretoria, where the University is located, including Freedom Park, and the local area where Henrietta has lived for the past 25 years were shown. The increasing distance between the poor and wealthy has led to an increase in poverty among whites and blacks. Some estimates say the rate of unemployment is as high as 40% – with increasing poverty levels leading to increased crime and the development of “security villages.” Much work is going on within the government to increase the rate of literacy and education.  While there are still 11 official languages, English is being spoken increasingly and is the official language of the University of South Africa.  In addition to history, Professor Loub teaches human dynamics and water aerobics.  She “loves people” and has an abiding interest in how feelings influence behavior. Example of making the 4 Way Test and dreams real: President Michael read an excerpt from The Last Lecture. Guests in attendance included Brian Burke’s father, Jim, who is visiting from Bethany Beach and who is celebrating his 65th birthday; Karen Hackmen, Leo’s wife; and Mike Hayes’ guests, his wife Barbara and her colleague from the guidance office of the school district, Jenny Ormsby.  A specially called Board of Directors meeting followed this meeting.
