Next Meeting: May 14 – Superintendent and Rotarian Dr. Fred Johnson will talk about ’08-’09 Selinsgrove Area School District Highlights.  SVCC, 11:45 a.m.  A Board of Directors meeting follows the regular meeting.

May 7, 2009 – The three Snyder County Commissioners, Bud Bickhart, Malcolm Derk, and Joe Kantz, provided a “State of the County” report to the members. They were introduced by host Paul Spiegel. The Commissioners were able to provide $33,000 to make the Selinsgrove Pool House handicap assessable when monies were able to be reallocated as the result of stimulus funds. All are concerned about the impact on the county budget if there is a 4% reduction in funds from the state for human service programs. Unfunded mandated programs will make tax increases necessary. A recent court decision regarding required reassessment will be quite costly but necessary for the County. Commissioners are proud of obtaining S & P A+ rating which enabled refinancing of debt which in turned saved the County more than $100,000. The commissioners have forged a working relationship which enables them to work as a team on behalf of residents. Fred Johnson introduced Vo Tech May student of the month, Matt Wagner.  A drafting student, Matt plans further study at Penn State in architecture.  Fred introduced history teacher Trudy Zimmerman, who in turn introduced April student of the month from Selinsgrove, Alicia Martin.  Alicia is involved with mock court and the honor society and plans to study biology at Elizabethtown College.  Fred introduced technology teacher Charles Kirshner who in turn introduced May student of the Month, Brian Boyer.  A ball play, Brian will study Engineering at Penn State in the fall. Living the 4 Way test: 7 Rotarians acknowledged ways in which they had been Rotarians during the past week – ranging from Don Harnum being the first visitor for a prisoner in 8 years, the Millers hosting a parent this weekend, Bob Soper being the chauffer for fellow Rotarians.
