August 27,  2009 – Twenty-seven Rotarians and guests were present to hear Sharon Koppel, Director of Snyder Union Mifflin Child Development, Inc. talk about the importance of early childhood education (all brain connections for learning are developed before age 6) and potential ways Rotary could contribute (help sponsor childcare for a middle income family; purchase equipment and/or books for a center, sponsor staff recognition event; become involved with a community engagement team; and urge businesses to become involved since most workers dependent on early childhood care). Sharon will be retiring in 2010 after 28 years with SUM Child Development. This area owes her a debt of gratitude for the positive impact she has had on improving the quantity and quality of early childhood education available in this area. Art Bowen served as greeter. Guests: Bill Reibenschieb (Art Bowen’s guest); John Thompson, former Bloomsburg Rotarian; and Brian Byers (Jennifer Johnson’s friend from Pittsburgh).

                                                      

Announcements: Movie Night in the Commons is scheduled for 8:30 p.m., tonight, Thursday, August 27. Bring a chair, something to drink and good humor for a night with the Three Stooges. Rain date 9/3. *Flag lady and cancelled meeting explained by President Jeff.**John Fischer announced Golf Tournament scheduled for Monday, Sept. 14 – hole sponsors, prices, players being sought for this SAYF and other projects fund raiser.***Tell Mike Hayes if you are able to host guests in your home for the Beds for a Cause program for SU’s family weekend – last weekend in October.

Good News of Rotary: Konrad Kempfe shared the fact that Shelter Box was the first responder to Taiwan following the recent typhoon.
