October 1, 2009 – Twenty-four Rotarians and Art Bowen’s guest, Bill Reibschieb, were present to hear Rotarian Michael Damiano describe his mission trip to Zimba, Zambia. Joyce Anderson served as greeter. The Mission Trip by the Christ Wesleyan Global Outreach Team was a part of the World Hope International program and worked with children in 4 day sports camp “having fun and building trust.”  The medical members of the team worked in the local hospital.  Michael shared pictures of some potable water projects done by Rotarians.  One in 5 Zambians have AIDS, with an average life expectancy of 35. Grades 1 – 8 are provided where there are schools, with the family needing to pay for any education beyond that level.  School “year” is two months in school and one month off.  English is taught in the schools in a society with 73 tribal dialects.  Dried white corn is the staple food. The National Road is a dirt road that turns to mud in the rainy season.  Poverty is extreme. Michael’s commitment to making a difference is inspiring.
