October 15, 2009 – Twenty-nine Rotarians and guests, including new member John Thompson and John Fischer’s guest and new step son-in-law Mike Bingaman, heard Keri Albright, President and CEO of the GSVUW, present information about United Way’s six Priorities for Impact: Alcohol and drug abuse and its effect on families and communities; Poverty and/or the dependency on social services and assistance programs; lack of public transportation; social opportunities for at-risk teens (13-16); accessibility to quality early child care; and need for greater understanding and appreciation for diverse and emerging Valley populations. The UW is building coalitions with others (government, chamber, agencies, etc.) to address issues. The re-opening of the dental clinic is of special note in this regard. Mike Flock arranged the program and Bob Soper served as greeter. Joyce Anderson noted Dottie Anderson’s 17th anniversary as a Rotarian and John Reed’s 7th year.
Announcements: Tell Mike Hayes if you are able to host guests in your home for the Beds for a Cause program for SU’s family weekend – last weekend in October. *Tom Gates is looking for 4 or 5 volunteers to help move and assemble artificial Christmas trees on 11/29 for Tree Fest. **The Halloween Parade is 10/20, chaired by Donna Shuck and Art Bowen, needing about 6 volunteers to distribute candy. Sign up sheet circulated.***The book selected for Tree Fest is Andy and Elmer’s Apple Dumpling Adventure, written by Andrew Shoup for the Fairborn, Ohio Rotary Club Literacy Project.****John Fischer reports that the golf tournament proceeds are at about $14,000, matching last year.
