October 29, 2009 – Thirty-three Rotarians and guests (Joyce Anderson’s guest: Justin Troup, Branch Manager of the Mifflinburg Bank and Trust; Art Bowen’s guests: Larry Means, Rhodes Development Group, Inc, a Harrisburg Rotarian and parent of a Susquehanna Student, and son in law and Realtor, Larry Johnson), heard a presentation by Charles Ross, President and CEO of the Greater Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce. Charles joined the Chamber in June of ’09, coming from the Baltimore area, with his wife and both are surprised by how quickly the valley has become home.  Charles earned a BA from John Hopkins and the JD from the University of Maryland.  His previous positions have been with government and private agencies.  He shared his goals of increasing the R(eturn) O(n) I(nvestment) for all Chamber members and for working on the economic development opportunities in the valley, using priorities of Education, Volunteerism, and Commitment. Art Bowen arranged for this program, and succeeded in introducing Rotarians to this energetic and enthusiastic Chamber President. .John Stokinger presided and Cathy Kline served as greeter. A Board Meeting followed the regular meeting.

Announcements: Members of the Nominating Committee are John Stokinger (Chair), Mike Hayes and John Bickhart.  *Tom Gates is looking for 4 or 5 volunteers to help move and assemble artificial Christmas trees on 11/29 for Tree Fest. **The book selected for Tree Fest is Andy and Elmer’s Apple Dumpling Adventure, written by Andrew Shoup for the Fairborn, Ohio Rotary Club Literacy Project. Committee includes Pat Pinkowski, Joyce Anderson’s granddaughter, Toby Skinner and Dottie Anderson.***Hal Schriver will be circulating a sign up sheet for Rotarians to Ring the Bell for the Salvation Army this holiday season.****Don Summers announced that the Dictionaries will be distributed on November 10 at the Intermediate School at 1:30 p.m. with the help of Rotary volunteers.

Good News of Rotary: Konrad Kempfe told members about a new club sponsored by the Honesdale, PA. Club in Kumbo, Cameroon.  An inspiring story of the chartering of a new Club and the work of equipping a hospital with a generator, so surgery no longer conducted with only the light of a flashlight.

Sergeant at arms: Marv Rudnitsky collected fines as follows: from Jack Roush (meeting new great grand daughter); Dottie Anderson for Mike Hayes (Yahoo to Tom Gates for completing Marine Corp marathon and others urged to join us at the Rotary Foundation Dinner at Tedd’s on the Hill 11/18); Joyce Anderson (her guest, Justin Troup and Marv’s recent recognition); Tom Gates (Mike’s completing the marathon, fun time with Mike and his family, completing goals); Art Bowen (Wild Things); Justin Troup (arrival of new child from Uganda); Mary Peterhaensel (late); Mike Piecuch (Halloween with tots); Fred Johnson (Red Ribbon week materials); John Stokinger (now a Phillies fan); and Earl Ferster (+15).
