Next Meeting: February 4, 2010 – We return to the SVCC (11:45 a.m.) with a program by Pat Hess, owner of Colonial Candlecrafters. A Board of Directors meeting follows regular meeting.

January 28, 2010 – Fifty plus Rotarians, Young Farmers, partners and guests were present at Christ Community United Methodist Church for the annual Urban/Rural Night Chicken and Waffles dinner. Jeff Edmunds presided and Charlie Benner introduced speaker Jim Cole, VP – agriculture, for Furmano Foods. The Furman Family began the business in 1921, and, with the 4th generation now involved, it accounts for approximately 5 million in Pa’s agricultural industry. Mr. Cole described the process involved in deciding on the type of plum tomato to be planted, on the qualities of the soil, and the every 4 year rotation of crops. Nine hundred acres, with 45 persons working in the program, are planted every year, with seedlings being grown in several locations around the country. The description of the Pick Right tomato harvester was of interest to many, as was the cost of the machine. Attendees sang happy birthday to Mike Flock. Whole hearted thanks are extended to the Busy Bees, the group who did all of the cooking and serving of the meal.
