March 11, 2010 – Approximately thirty Rotarians and guests were present for Dr. Gary Sojka’s very interesting and engaging talk about endangered livestock breed conservancy. Introduced by Mike Hayes, Dr. Sojka spoke about the species of livestock and the development of “breed” (about 1776) by Englishman Robert Bakewell and its political underpinnings as people “agreed” to the fixed traits that would be accomplished through inbreeding. Today there are standard breeds, type breeds and industrial or proprietary breeds. Maintaining original breeds is important for protection and safety of the food supply in the long run, while at the same time feeding the people of the world.
