July 8, 2010: Twenty-four members were present for Emily Johnson’s talk about Governor Simon Snyder and the monument to his memory located behind Sharon Lutheran Church in the Old Lutheran Cemetery. At 125 years old, the monument is in need of conservation. The sculptor was George E. Bissell, with the base made of field stone placed by local residents’, the monument is made of quartz granite. Erected at the cost of $3000 by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, its conservation is estimated to cost $30,000 and fund raising is underway with the assistance of Selinsgrove Projects, Inc. serving as recipient of the funds. Emily’s presentation gave “life” to Gov. Snyder and the importance of the monument to Selinsgrove.
