July 15, 2010: Twenty-six Rotarians and guests (Andrew and Charlie Hayes and Spanish sister, Paula) were present for Susan Bolig’s presentation about service animals. Susan, introduced by Michael Hayes, accompanied by service dog, Reeses, spoke about the goals she and her husband had in deciding to have a service dog to work with their son, Ryan. Goals included promoting bonding (very important for autistic children), encouraging Ryan’s speech and social skills, and teaching responsibility. After a two year wait, Reeses became a member of the family a year and a half ago. Susan shared experiences the family has had with the dog and emphasized the need for the dog to stay focused and well trained. The goals they had have been more than met.
