August 5, 2010: Fifty-three Rotarians and guests were present as Rotary hosted ten students from Japan’s Senshu University. Coordinator of Susquehanna’s program, Mimi Rice, a Senshu faculty member and a staff member were also present. Sean Ringkamp, a former Rotary exchange student from Lewisburg, spoke about his experiences in Japan and the ways Rotary’s program had changed his life. He leaves this coming Tuesday for college in Hawaii where he will continue his study of Japanese.  A visiting Rotarian from Milton, Bonnie Wassman,  prospective member Scott Oliver, and Michael and Barbara Hayes, together with sons Charlie and Andrew, Samantha Barnhart, harp teacher Ruth Hunter and Spanish “niece,” Paula Gomez, who entertained those present with harp music, rounded out this very special Rotary meeting.

Announcements: 8/21 is the District wide Membership Workshop in Sunbury from 8:30 to noon, followed by lunch at a cost of $12 per person.

Good News of Rotary:  Konrad Kempfe shared information about Steve Dudenhoefer, a Rotarian who sold his successful landscaping business in Florida, who is now dedicating his life to alleviating the plight of an indigenous community in the rain forests of eastern Guatemala.

Proposed New Member: Scott Oliver, Assistant Chief Executive Officer, Sunbury Community Hospital, Classsification: Health Care Administrator, sponsored by Joyce Anderson. Any objections should be conveyed to President John Stokinger within seven days of this notice.

Future Programs:

Aug. 19 – Rotary Family Picnic, 6 p.m., SVCC. Swimming pool will be available. Games for children also planned. Pat Pinkowski is circulating the sign-up sheet. Mike Flock will serve as Newsletter Editor.

Aug. 26 – Tour and lunch at the Snyder County Historical Museum, Middleburg, as arranged by Toby Skinner. 11:45 a.m.

Sept. 2 – TBA as arranged by John Bickhart, SVCC, 11:45 a.m.

Sept. 9 – As arranged by Nelson Bailey, Club will tour the new Science Building and have lunch at Susquehanna University. 11:45 a.m. Newsletter Editor needed.
