Dec. 2, 2010: Twenty-seven Rotarians and guests were present for Michael Damiano’s program about his August mission trip to Guatemala. The Club provided some funding to this program which was designed to teach English to residents of this very remote village. The village is located on the side of a mountain leading to a very large and deep self contained lake. The group from Christ Wesley in Milton estimates that they reached approximately 300 people, teaching each approximately 180 English words during their one week trip. Language cards and books were left at the Christian school. Tim Duke was installed as a new member of the Selinsgrove Club by Dottie Anderson with the assistance of his sponsor, Pat Pinkowski. Pat presided at today’s meeting. Guests: The Rev. John Snook, hosted by Hal Dunkleberger and banker Tom Ross, hosted by Tom Gates.
Announcements: Hal Schriver circulated a signup sheet for Salvation Army Bell Ringing beginning on Tuesday evening, Dec. 7, Late Shoppers Night.*Calendars are available from President John Stokinger.**Tree Fest will run from 12/3-17. Thanks are expressed to those Rotarians who assisted in setting up trees last evening.***John Thompson shared a thank you from Snyder County Red Cross for our donation that assisted them in setting up communications network.****Toby Skinner provided information about the Gov. Simon Snyder exhibit opening June 3 with presentation and reception.*****Club will meet at BJ’s January 6, 13, 20 and 1st two weeks in February while kitchen at SVCC undergoes renovations.
Good News of Rotary: Konrad Kempfe updated members on the work of the Basra Prosthetic and Rehabilitation Center run by Rotarian Linda Smythe, Washington, DC Club, working with St. Petersberg College.
Acting Sergeant at arms: Konrad Kempfe collected fines from: Art Bowen (family Thanksgiving Day); Pat Pinkowski (the same); Bill Clark (Atlanta for son’s 50th and Maryland for grandparents day);Tom Gates (Rotarian help with tree fest, including Andrew and Charlie Hayes); John Thompson (first place for Ham Radio Club); Toby Skinner (Friends of the Library successful Art and Wine event); Mike Damiano (1st place for Edward Jones as an employer); Tim Duke (Hawaii honeymoon and joining Club); Charlie McCuen (Art and Wine event) and, later, a large fine from Mike Piecuch for pulling the plug on technology.
Future Programs:Dec. 16 – Holiday Dinner and Social, with entertainment provided by the Enduring Chords, a Lewisburg quartet. Social begins at 6 p.m., dinner at 6:30. Art Bowen hosts. Partners and guests expected and welcome. Sign-up sheet being circulated.
Dec. 23 – Susanna Falck will speak about the District’s Potable Water project in Ecuador, Konrad Kempfe hosts, 11:45 a.m.
Dec. 30 – Mike Flock hosts this program on the Isle of Que River Guides, presented by Jim Charles. SVCC, 11:45 a.m. Newsletter Editor needed.
