June 16, 2011: Sixty-three Rotarians and guests met at the Priestly House in
Northumberland for a picnic dinner provided by the Sunbury Club and a tour of
the visitor center, the house and the newly reconstructed laboratory. The
“stage set” laboratory will be dedicated on Sunday. About 10 years in the
planning, the project was designed by Eric Viker of Susquehanna University’s
Theater Department and built by several of the stage set design students. The
Priestly House is staffed by a devoted group of “Friends” who volunteer to
serve as tour guides at this state owned property. Priestly was a scientist,
scholar, teacher, and minister who came to this country when he was 61. His
most noted discovery is oxygen and he is acknowledged as the “father” of
Chemistry. This was a delightful evening with spirits not dampened by the rain.If you have not visited before, do consider
sharing this experience with others – it is well worth it.
