Twenty-seven Rotarians
and a guest (Melissa Laniewski, a Realtor with the Bowen Agency) were present to
hear Jeffrey Coup, District Chairman for the Polio Plus campaign, describe fund
raising progress to date. In 1975 RI established an inoculation program in the Philippines’
through the HHH program, which eventually led to establishing the 1985 goal of
Controlling Polio by 2005. This program became Polio Plus with the addition of
other diseases to the immunizations. Working with UNICEF, WHO and the United
Nations, and with the matching grant provided by the Gates Foundation, RI seeks
to eradicate wild polio in the world. The Pedal Out Polio event this spring
raised better than $20,000 from the district and will continue next year.
