March 1, 2012: Thirty-one Rotarians and guests (Sheri Hoffman’s guests-two new

were in attendance to hear Dr. Donald Housley speak about his recently completed
book, Make it the Best – A History of
Geisinger Health System 1912-2001
. Nelson Bailey was the host. This was
a very interesting presentation pointing out what has made Geisinger unique – such
as the fact that it was planned and built as a hospital by Abigail Geisinger in
1912-15, part of a movement in America to provide services beyond “cottage”
hospitals used to treat patients with industrial/railroad accident injuries; it
has had only 4 CEO’s – all of whom were/are surgeons with an administrator
counterpart (each of its components share this model); it started as a
proprietorship with Abigail Geisinger, but in 1917 she changed this to a trust
which was held by a bank. Now Geisinger
Foundation holds and owns all the non-profit components. The book is available
on line or at the Geisinger Gift Shop for $5.00.Dave Lawer and Jared Roush were introduced as
a newest members.
