Thirty-four Rotarians and guests (Chad Cohrs
guest was Jeff Hummel, SASD Business Manager; Donna Shuck’s guest was visiting
Rotarian Eric DeWald of the SVCF) were in attendance to hear a presentation by
Joseph Gallagher, MD, from Central Penn Gastroenterology. John Stokinger served
as host. Dr. Gallagher, a Selinsgrove native, returned to the area about 11
years ago, following his education and training, residency at Hershey Medical
Center and several years practice in the southern United States. He spoke about
colon cancer, the 2nd leading cause of cancer deaths. Approximately
140,000 cases a year are diagnosed in the developed world, with about 50,000
deaths per year. While it most commonly occurs after age 50, he has diagnosed
someone at 28. Physical activity, diet, calcium intake, Omega 3 fatty acids,
aspirin and statins are all related to prevention. It is recommended that
everyone have a colonoscopy at age 50, with a repeat every ten years if no
abnormalities are found, and a repeat every 3 to 5 years if polyps are found.
Earl Ferster distributed Daffodils and announced that Rotarians had contributed
$531 in support of this Cancer Society fund raiser. Any not picked up were
taken to Grayson View.
