2013
: Twenty-seven Rotarians and a
guest (John Thompson’s wife Shirley) were present as member Dr. John Thompson
spoke about Amateur Radio Contesting for Non-Hams. Started in 1914, ham radio
had and has the goal of providing emergency communications in times of disaster.
The need in times of disaster has lessoned because of cell phone communications
and the internet, however, ham “nuts” exist around the world and take pride in
their endeavors. Contesting is sponsored by various local, national and
international clubs and track the number of contacts or two way conversations
that an operator can make in an 8 to 48 hour period of time. Johns showed us
the kinds of log records that are kept and used to determine winners. He also showed pictures of antennae that are
used and the airport location for the local club.
