June 13, 2013: Twenty-five Rotarians and a guest were present as Michael Hayes and
Lauren Hoover spoke about the Summer SEALS Day Camp, 2013. Lauren, who has been
a teacher and then Assoc. Director of the SSDC, is the Director of the Camp
this year. She and Michael used a SSDC questionnaire as a way of sharing
information about the camp, especially for new members who are not aware of the
history. Started in 2007, with sponsorship from the Club, the Selinsgrove Area
School District and the Department of Education at Susquehanna, the 7 week
summer program for 15 3rd and 15 4th graders, the program
seeks to improve math and reading skills, and to privde positive improvement in
self esteem. Rotarians currently on the board include Michael, Dottie Anderson,
Toby Skinner, Chad Cohrs, Mike Piecuch. The program is funded entirely by
donations from individuals, foundations, businesses, and the EITC program and
requires that about $40,000 be raised annually. This was a fun program and a reminder
of the contributions that Rotarians have made to the development and
sustainability of this program.
