Rotary-Change Lives

Vol. 86, No.
29

President – Donna SchuckEditor – Dottie Anderson

Next Meeting: Feb. 13, 2014 – The speaker will be Debbie
Wolf from Snyder County Recycling. Installation of new member(s), Dottie
Anderson Installing Officer. SVCC, 11:45 a.m.

Feb. 6, 2014:
Twenty-five Rotarians and guests (Rocky Baer) were present for State
Representative Lynda Schlegel Culver’s presentation about current legislation.
The host was Jared Roush. Redistricting is occurring this year, so Snyder Ct.
will end up being represented by Representatives Culver and Keller. People may
find this a bit confusing until elections have past. Areas reported on are
Transportation (large number of roads and bridges in PA make this especially
difficult) – need to repair infrastructure is a safety and an economic development
concern. Governor’s budget has been submitted to the legislature and includes
increased funds for both public and higher education, though it is not yet
clear how this money will be distributed (strings attached). Privatization of
liquor stores still on agenda, as in legalizing marijuana for medical uses (oil
form). Michael Damiano, RI Foundation representative, presented a Paul Harris
Fellow plus 2 to Jerry Rhoads.

Announcements:
The Club is having conversations about sponsoring a new Rotary breakfast club in
Shamokin Dam at the request of the District Governor. President Donna invited
those with comments/opinions to speak with her. John Stokinger will represent
the Selinsgrove Club at the initial meeting.*Joyce Anderson read thank you
notes from Children and Youth and children of our Christmas “family.”**Dave
Lawer updated us on the work of the Dental Clinic and the results of the War on
the Shore – 85 patients received services as a result of the money raised. Over
$12,000 was raised from the cooperating auto dealerships. Dave will circulate a
list of the dealers so members with contacts can thank them for their
participation. Good News of Rotary: Konrad
Kempfe shared information about the work of the Fort Lauderdale Rotary Club
with partners from various schools to raise money to provide personal water
purification devises (LifeStraw@units). They are committed to meeting the UN
goal of reducing by half the number of people without access to safe drinking
water by 2015. Sergeant of Arms:
Konrad Kempfe collected happy fines as follows: Toby Skinner (Happy Brithday);
and from Melissa Laniewski (daughter’s wedding and good weather); John
Stokinger (Jerry, enjoying snow); Chad Cohrs (speaker and good representation
for education; hating snow); Mike Flock (Chuck – Lynda’s brother and enjoying
working with him at the bank); Bill Clark (Jerry, Dave plowing snow, NYC trip);
