March 6, 2014:
Twenty-nine Rotarians were in attendance
for Scott Heintzelman’s presentation about the Northumberland County Historical
Society’s restoration of the Fort Augusta model. Bob Soper was the host. Scott,
who is the Ex. VP and Trust Officer at Northumberland National Bank, is also
President of the Northumberland Ct. Historical Society. Fort Augusta was bu8ild
in 1756, in response to the Penns Creek Massacre. Deliberately placed at the
junction of the branches of the Susquehanna, Gov. Morris named it after the mother
of King George III. The 1/6 scale model was built as a WPA project in 1939, on
the front lawn of the historic Hunter House. The Historical Society took
ownership of the property in the early 1990’s, the state has removed the model
and cleaned it out in the 1980’s – fortunately, a resident of Northumberland
had taken what remained of the model and had it in his back yard. The
restoration of the model had been on the agenda of the Society for a number of
years, and required the Society to raise just under $200,000 (with 30,000 still
to go), to engineer it in a way that would preserve the restored models.Rocky Baer engineered the project. All are
invited to visit both the Historical Society museum and the model.
