June 19, 2014: Twenty-nine Rotarians, partners and guests (including Mary Seiler who used to print and distribute the newsletter) were present for the twenty-ninth annual Distinguished Service Award Dinner. Paul Heintzelman and Richard “Doc” Sheaffer were honored for their more than 40 years a piece of service to the Boy Scounts. Art Bowen hosted the event, with Donna Schuck presiding and welcoming our honorees and guests. Speaking about Paul and “Doc” were Fay Trick and Tom Dahlman, both of whom have worked with them in scouting since the early 1980’s. Siting the goal of scouting to be “fun with a purpose,” it was noted that troop 419 “sets the pace for the District” thanks in large part to Paul and “Doc” who follow a servant leader philosophy. In addition to several awards from Scouting, Paul is known as “Mr. Hiker” having made 6 trip to Philmont in New Mexico and several trips to the White Mountains, he has just returned from a hiking trip in Alaska. In addition he continues to do mission work with the United Methodist Church. “Doc,” an Optometrist who has practiced in Selinsgrove since the early 70’s, has volunteered as a Little League coach and a soccer coach (becoming a referee), and he continues to be active in his church where he has served as treasurer for 33 years. In presenting the Distinguished Service Award, Art noted that we are pleased to honor two people who practice the “Service Above Self” motto of Rotary.
