Light Up Rotary

Vol. 87, No. 17       President – Dave Lawer        Editor – Dottie Anderson

Next Meeting: October 30, 2014 – Speaker will be Jeff Martin, Painter and Portrait Artist. Charlie McCuen is both the host and the Greeter. First call for Nominations from the floor. 11:45 a.m., SVCC.

October 23, 2014: Twenty-four Rotarians were at the meeting which featured Dr. John Turner, Medical Director and Andrea Bertram, Administrative Director, of The Thyra M. Humphreys Center for Breast Health. Dr. Tuner spoke about “Current Topics in Breast Cancer” in which he shared developments in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, such as now looking at how the tumor behaves, using molecular staging rather than by size of the tumor. Donna Schuck was the host and Melissa Laniewski was the greeter. This was an interesting and informative program.

Announcements: President Dave reported that the nominating committee is in process and should be prepared for the first call for nominations from the floor next week. We are all disappointed to learn from Gaston Carroll that he will be leaving the Club in order to pursue a new business opportunity which means he won’t be in our area.*Halloween parade was 10/21 and members distributed candy (provided by Chris Kenawell) at the start of the parade to participants. Melissa Laniewski, Toby Skinner, Dave Lawer, and Earl Ferster volunteered.**President Dave requests we all check out the Community Corps section of the Rotary.org web site to see if we wish to participate. Please speak with President Dave if you are interested in participating in the Rotary Leadership Course.

Rotary Minute: In Mike Flock’s absence President Dave reported on the efforts to obtain more publicity for the Club.

Sargent at Arms: John Stokinger collected happy dollars as follows: Happy Birthday to John Reed and Ryan Felty (he “fessed up” that his birthday is Oct. 25) John Reed added fines for a Va. Beach trip, and his wife’s 50th high school reunion trip complete with family dog.
