November 6, 2014: Twenty-six Rotarians and guests (Art Bowen’s guest, Gary Ames from Lewisburg) were present as James Marker, Special Assistant to the Secretary of the PA Department of Public Welfare spoke about the initiative to increase the number of employers who hire persons with disabilities as well as contacting various groups and agencies who can help identify potential good employees that happen to have some sort of disability. Mr. Marker, a graduate from the Univ. of Pittsburgh who has previously served as County Commissioner in Somerset County and has held various positions in DBW, shared information about the Governors Association initiative and industries such as Walgren’s who have successfully responded. Art Bowen was the host. Dottie Anderson inducted Brian Betz into membership with assistance from his sponsor, Ken Miller. Dave Lawer reported for the Nominating Committee on the slate for 2014-15. Mike Piecuch, President; Mary Peterhaensel, President Elect; Ryan Felty, Vice President; Hal Dunkelberger, Secretary; Jared Roush, Treasurer; Art Bowen, Club Service; tba/Melissa Lanewski, Co-Directors for Community Service; Toby Skinner, Vocational Service; Art Bowen, Club Service; Marv Rudnitksy, New Generations; TBA – International Service. Ken Miller will continue as President of Selinsgrove Recreation, Marv Rudnitsky will continue as Sergeant at Arms. Second call for nominations resulted in no additional nominees. Note that nominees are needed for the International Service Avenue of Service and a co-director is needed for Community Service. Please speak with President Dave if you are interested in serving in either of these positions. Elections are next Thursday and it would be unfortunate if the slate isn’t complete. Announcements: *Don Summers confirms that the dictionary distribution to third graders at the Selinsgrove Intermediate School will occur on 11/14 at the Intermediate School at 12:30. Let him know if you wish to help.**Holiday Party will be on Dec. 18 at our regular meeting time with members of the new Interact Club as well as guests/partners, etc. Details to follow. ***Joyce Anderson will again head our Christmas Family Project and John Stokinger and Dave Lawer will be in touch re a Fund Raising Committee Meeting. Rotary Minute: Bob Soper shared information about the Rotary Foundation and the projects it has funded. Good News of RI: Konrad Kempfe shared information about the humor to be found in the beginning of a major disaster response during Hurricane Sandy in NJ – see your Rotary Nov. magazine – page 36.
