January 21, 2015: Twenty-one Rotarians were present as host John Reed introduced speaker Jeff Buckley, Chief of the Hummels Wharf Fire Company. Jeff spoke about the issues related to the operation of volunteer fire companies. Jeff has been part of the Company since he was 14 and has been its Chief for 28 years. Today, on his birthday, he told members about the financial issues in keeping equipment up to date and the successful operations of their social club which provides significant funding to the Company. Recruiting and retaining volunteers has become difficult for this Company founded in 1931. Also discussed was the kind of long range planning done by Hummels Wharf and the efforts toward uniting small fire companies to achieve greater financial and personnel efficiencies.
