Next Meeting: May 14, 2015 – Meet the 2015 Rotary/SACF Scholarship winners. Kendra Aucker is the host. SVCC, 11:45 a.m.

May 7, 2015: Twenty-six Rotarians and guests (Raven Rudnitsky and Susan Damiano) were present to hear Jerry Splitt, Coordinator of the Geisinger Medical Center Life Flight. Mike Flock was the host. Historically, the first know air medical transport occurred in 1870 in the Prussian War. The first hospital based program was in 1972 at St. Anthony’s hospital in Denver, CO. GMC program started in the 1970’s, when Dr. Thomas Royer was the ER Medical Director and asked Dr. Michael Leicht to investigate the possibilities. The program began on July 1, 1981 and will soon celebrate its 35th anniversary. Now with 5 different base locations and approximately 100 employees, there are 7 helicopters (2 backups), with night vision technology and 24/7 operations. Having National accreditation for the flight program, they are looking to establish critical care ground transport with the same equipment as the helicopters. This is truly a life-saving occupation and one providing major service in central Penna.
