July 16, 2015: Twenty Rotarians and guests (Barry Miller, Ken’s brother) were present at the SVCC for a program by Jim Campbell about the history of the NFL. The weather caused change from planned meeting with the SSDC campers, enabled the campers to have a beautiful day at Flock Pond. Hopefully the lunch with Rotarians and other guests can be rescheduled. Meanwhile, thanks to the Rotarians who on short notice arranged for the Club to be back at the SVCC and to have a program. James Josh Campbell, who spent 14 years working in the NFL, shared fun facts – like professional football did not start in Latrobe in 1895, but actually 3 years earlier in Pittsburgh when Pudge Heffelfinger accepted $500 to play with the Allegheny Athletic Club to play in a game with Pittsburgh Athletic Club. While in the 1890’s the center of football was in the west of PA, it moved to Northeaster Ohio. Players were typically college educated players who weren’t ready to give up playing and they accepted pay to do so (sometimes by watch given and pawned). This was an enjoyable presentation and we thank Jim for stepping up on short notice. Past President Dave Lawer presided as new President Mike Piecuch was at a professional conference.
