Be a Gift to the World

Vol. 88, No. 17    President – Mike Piecuch         Guest Editor – John Stokinger

Next Meeting: November 5, 2015 – 11:45 a.m., SVCC. Annual Meeting, Election of 201 6-17 Officers and Directors; Susannah Faulk will be our speaker. This meeting will be preceded by a Board of Directors Meeting at 11 a.m.

Oct. 29, 2015: 19 Rotarians and 1 guest were present to hear Fanny Mayeur, our Rotary exchange student, speak to the club. Her host “mom”, Brittany Bunting-Specht, accompanied her. Fanny is from Belgium and she gave us a geography lesson about her home. It is small, only 11,787 square miles. There are separate regional areas, similar to our countries or states. Belgium has 11,203,992 people. Brussels is the capital, which is a major city for Europe, with NATO and other international entities headquartered there. The country has 3 primary languages spoken, Flemish to the North, French to the South and German to the East. Some more unusual facts…178 breweries create 800 different beers; 440,924,560 pounds of chocolate are produced in Belgium each year. Fanny left her mom, dad, and 13 year old sister at home (and 4 cats). She hasn’t decided what she’ll study in college. This year will help her make that decision. She was on Selinsgrove High School’s fall tennis team. She hopes to play basketball this winter and lacrosse in the spring. She’s been to New York City once and will be going back in November.
