April 21, 2016:  Thirty plus Rotarians and guests were in attendance for the Second Community Spirit Award Luncheon, honoring the work of the Dauntless Hook and Ladder volunteers. John Stokinger presided and Earl Ferster provided the invocation. Speakers were Tom Garlock, Selinsgrove Police Chief and Paul Williams, Borough Manager. Fire Chief Don Weirick and Assistant Fire Chief Drew Heintzelman were present to accept the award on behalf of the company. Chief Garlock spoke about the wholehearted commitment volunteer firemen make to respond 24 hours a day, and to run into a burning building. The requirements on training, 200 hours before a volunteer can even go along with the company, plus the time commitment make it increasingly difficult to recruit volunteers. The company at this point has about 40 people on the rolls, with about 15 active and responding to all pages. Paul Williams urged all to read Senate Resolution 60 which describes incentives that could/should be provided to these volunteers. It was passed a decade ago, but has not be fully implemented. It is estimated that it would require an additional 3 million annually for the Borough to provide fire protection using paid personnel. Joyce Anderson was the host and Konrad Kempfe was the greeter. Joyce is thanked for once again putting this special program together, providing a printed program and table decorations.
