Aug. 4, 2016: What a wonderful evening at Rotary Field where Rotarians, partners, present and past campers, campers families, guests and donors numbering over 200 people, celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Summer SEALS Day Camp. The Camp, a partnership with the Club, the Selinsgrove Area School District, Susquehanna University Education Department and the Selinsgrove Area Community Foundation, provides a six week summer program for selected rising 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders. A slide show by Mike Piecuch provided wonderful background, with music provided by Drew Kelly as guests gathered for the event. A special video done by Steve Paterson was well received and will be posted on the summer SEALS web site. Kendra Aucker, CEO/President of the Evangelical Community Hospital provided a wonderful keynote address. Michael Hayes, President of the Board, and Dottie Anderson, Secretary, thanks all who have been involved in the program during the 10 year period.  Rotarians Ken Miller, Tom Gates, Marv Rudnitsky and Dottie Anderson were involved in the development of the camp in 2007, and it is these discussions that led to the partnership with the University and the School District. Mike Flock and John Bickhart have annually done the camper trip to Flock Pond that is always a highlight for the campers. Called back from enjoying the bouncy house and the slushies, the campers were introduced and enjoyed sharing information about this summers’ units – Dinosaurs, weather, and the Olympics – showing the crafts that accompanied the units and talking about the field trips.  The 5th graders received “graduation certificates” after a showing of Brittany Bunting Specht’s slide show featuring the camps activities.  Those of us on the camp board (Michael Hayes, Mike Piecuch, Mike Coyne, Toby Skinner, Patti Miller, Marty Blessing, George Cravitz, and David McLaughlin) is so grateful for all of the event sponsors and effort by committee member for the event in making it happen.  Susquehanna staff Liz Grove and Brenda Mull were essential in making the event a success.  Saying thank you to all for their support, both for the event and over the years could take a book!  Our goal for the evening was to acquaint a wider community group with the nature of the program and its successes and challenges – goal accomplished!
