Selinsgrove Area Rotary Club
Rotary Serving Humanity
Vol. 89, No. 6 President – Mary Peterhaensel Editor – Dottie Anderson
Next Meeting: August 18, 2016 – Art Lieberman of MCPS, will speak about credit card processing. Brian Neitz is the host. Chad Cohrs is the greeter. SVCC, 11:45 a.m.
Aug. 11, 2016: Catherine Lucci, our “returned” Rotary Exchange Student, spoke about her year in Taiwan and her future plans. Mike Flock introduced Catherine (noting that the Club first met Catherine when she participated in and one the first Four Way Speech contest) and Mike Piecuch was the host. Joyce Anderson was the greeter. Catherine had prepared a video presentation and shared information about the food of the country (including a cricket), its education system (almost year round and from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.) and its festivals. A highlight for her among many, was meeting the President of Taiwan, its first woman President, and being on the TV news. Teaching English to 15 and 16 year olds, studying Mandarin Chinese, her three host families, the Rotary District, celebrating her 19th birthday in Taiwan and learning to stick her finger in the cake, experiencing an earthquake and two typhoons, and 6 other exchange students from around the world, were all special experiences and Catherine has clearly made full use of the Rotary Exchange program. Later this month she starts at the University of North Caroline, Chapel Hill to study business and Chinese on a full scholarship.
