January 26, 2017:
With President Elect Toby Skinner and host Sarah Maneval presiding, approximately 50 Rotarians, Young Farmers, and guests were present at Christ Community Church for the annual Urban/Rural Night Dinner. Featured speaker was Elvin Stolfoos, President/Founder of Pikrite, along with VP of Finance and Operations, Kevin Baker. Elvin, one of 19 children, three of whom were adopted, worked with his father on the farm, and learned all about picking crops, especially tomatoes. He left school after the 8th grade at the request of his father in order to work on the farm. Pikrite was started in 1986, when the first tomato picker was built. Now a company that does business worldwide, there are spreaders (both manure and cinder), harvesters, tanks, dump trucks, leaf pickers designed and built by Pikrite. With 70 some employees and a specific vision and culture, the company values its employees and customers. Mr. Stolfoos was inspiring as he shared his personal philosophy – “take the time to value relationship” and the company motto – “ built to work the way you work.” The family continues to be involved in farming and selling grain. As always, the Busy Bees of the church provided an excellent chicken and waffle dinner appreciated by the attendees. Editor’s note: Jerry Rhoads would have approved of how the evening evolved.
