May 11, 2017: Twenty-six Rotarians and guests were present as Dave Lawer introduced the SACF/Rotary Club Scholarship Recipients for 2017. Dottie Anderson shared some of the history of the scholarship program which is first discussed by the Club in 1979 and implemented with a $500 one year scholarship in the 1980’s. Since 1993 when the Club started the Selinsgrove Area Youth Foundation with an initial $10,000, the Scholarship program has grown into 4 $1000 per year in college scholarships for three four year students and one two year Vo Tech student. The current Scholarship Committee for the SACommunityF, is Chaired by Dave Lawer and incudes Phil Winer and Rotarians Pat Pinkowski and Carol Handlan. Selected from among the 30+ applicants the four selected for 2017 are: Leonard Times (Vo Tech, attending Penn College as a Welding and Fabrication major; he came to Selinsgrove from Arizona and has an internship in New Mexico this summer before starting his post high school program, he is captain of the soccer team); Lauren Rowe (will attend Juniata College as a pre-me or pre-vet student, she has been active in Art, music and forensics and will be participating in the National Forensics tournament in Kentucky); Page Hepner (plans to attend Wilkes as a 5 year pharmacy major, plays soccer, is president of the honor society, has completed a semester of college credits at Bloomsburg); and Keyana Zellers (first in her family to attend college, she will go to Susquehanna or Juniata, majoring in Biology and History, an active member of the key club, girl scouts, Tolerance Troupe, and member of the Grease cast). Carol Handlan, at Dave’s request, shared a bit about helping current Selinsgrove students locate all means of funding for college.

Announcements:  Mallet Madness is rapidly approaching – May 19-20 – please continue to recruit teams and players, as well as sign up to volunteer for set up, referee, etc. Continue to recruit teams and non-profits to participate – we have 33 teams on a goal of 45.*Host families are being sought for our inbound exchange student from South Korea. Speak with Marv Rudnitsky about this possibility.**July 25 will be our Gazebo Hotdog Night this summer.***Mary and Hal are participating in the District Conference.

June 15 – Host John Fischer has arranged for Jane Taylor to speak about and share photos of her recent trip to Vietnam. SVCC, 11:45 a.m.
