Dec.13, 2018: Twenty-one Rotarians and guests (honorary member Bob Soper and Sally Lauer, Melissa’s mom) were present as Melissa Laniewski spoke about the tradition of the Christmas tree. Her scheduled speaker, Carol Drumheiser, VP Operations for Hope Enterprises, had to cancel because of a work requirement. Melissa loves Christmas trees and decorates multiple trees in her home every year. Using power point, she noted things like the fact that the Puritans thought the custom to be pagan, the in 1846, Queen Victoria’s picture with she and her family in front of a decorated tree, brought decorated trees into fashion, and that lights for trees were invented by Thomas Edison. She concluded her program with a poem by e.e.cummings.
Announcements: Tree Fest goes on till 12/20, so be sure to stop by and vote for the Rotary tree decorated by the Maneval Family, using the book Finding Nemo.*Think about people you know who would be good nominees for the Distinguished Service Award.
