Feb. 7, 2019: Twenty-one Rotarians and guest Stacey Piecuch, were present as Melissa Farrow, the Stigma Reduction and Education Specialist for the United in Recovery Coalition, spoke about the work to reduce the stigma felt (imagined or real) by people because they are impacted by substance abuse issues. This work by the Coalition is sponsored by the United Way as part of their goal to reduce substance abuse in our area. The coalition works in Snyder, Union, Columbia, Montour and Northumberland Counties. Mike Piecuch was the host. Stacey Piecuch is on the staff of the GSVUW and works with its coalition to reduce substance abuse. It is clear that stigma and all that surrounds those negative feelings, delays or prevents the person and the family of that person from seeking the help that is needed to bring about change and for the substance abuser to recover – weather the abuse be of opioids, other drugs and/or alcohol. Melissa is just beginning her work and we were her first presentation. A Board Meeting preceded. VP Handlan noted our thanks to members who have supported exchange student monthly allowance and to Jared Roush and Norry Bank for their support of the Rural/Urban night dinner.
