Selinsgrove Area Rotary Club
Be the Inspiration
Vol. 91, No. 31 President – Cheryl Stumpf Editor – Dottie Anderson
Next Meeting: March 7, 2019 – Club Assembly about Membership. President Cheryl Stumpf presiding. SVCC, 11:45 a.m. Board Meeting precedes at 11 a.m.
Feb. 28, 2019: Twenty Rotarians and Cheryl’s guest, Heidi Dunnigan, were present as Michele Ocker-Holman, Asst. General Manager, Union and Snyder County, described the work of Rabbit transit, Central Pennsylvania Transportation Authority. Formerly Union Snyder Transportation Authority started in 1989, they were merged in 2016 when Penn Dot regionalized this program which is designed to provide transportation for the elderly (over 65) and the disabled. Funding streams for the service included the Lottery, PWD, and Medical Asst. Transportation. The regional organization is run out of York, with local offices in Selinsgrove at the County building on Bridge Street. The major improvement for local transport is that it can be run more efficiently since services are not confined to only one or two counties. Individuals may have a co-pay for some rides on a mileage basis depending on the reason for the trip. An application is required, with proof of age, to register for the service. Locally they average 300 trips per day. Currently there is no fixed route schedule in our area and for this to happen (which several in the audience believed would be beneficial) would require Union and Snyder County commissioners to agree to have a share of costs within the county budget. Earl Ferster was the host for this very informative program.
Announcements: Planning meetings continue for 2019’s Mallet Madness. All members are urged to share with any non-profits (including church, or boards you serve on) about the event and work to turn up sponsors and members for the two person teams. This year the event is scheduled for June 8. Brochures were distributed to help with outreach.*Remember to bring in batteries to fill the “Big Green Box” which enables recycling of non-rechargeable batteries. Please bring in batteries to be recycled in the plastic bags provided and place in the box that will be available at every meeting. When box is full, it will be returned to the company and recycled. If this is successful, the Board will determine if the project continues.**Dave Lawer advises us that the online application for college scholarships will be open tomorrow at csgiving.com.
