Be the Inspiration
Vol. 91, No. 43 President – Cheryl Stumpf Editor – Dottie Anderson
Next Meeting – June 6, 2019 – An Ehrlich representative will speak about seasonal pests. Host is Hal Dunkelberger. SVCC, 11:45 a.m. A Board Meeting of Officers and Directors precedes the regular meeting and includes those who will be new to the board for 2019-20. Calendar for the 2019-20 Rotary year will be discussed and confirmed.
May 30, 2019 – Twenty-five Rotarians and guests (Don Summers’ wife Krista; and new members Gary Gonsar and Gerald Stauffer) were present as Stephanie Burke, Director of the By Grace Transitional Home, spoke about the services provided by the home. Stephanie holds both an undergrad and a master’s degree in Social Work. The Transitional Home is an outreach program of the Grace Covenant Community Church and after years of work, they received their occupancy permit in 2016. In 2018 they provided services to 31 adults and 35 children, and operated at 85-100% occupancy throughout the year. Residents are required to participate in volunteer services if they don’t have outside jobs. If they are employed, they pay $40 per week to the home, half of which is used to buy housekeeping or personal care products, and half of which is kept in the residents account so they have savings toward rent deposits when they leave. An average stay is 4 to 5 months. While in residence there are life skills lessons that are required. Funds to operate are provided through the thrift store operated by the home as well as catering services. Current fund raising is concentrating on raising funds to provide a new roof. Stephanie told us about calling #211 as a way of obtaining services for persons who are homeless – that number has been in operation since January in a several county area. Thanks to Pat Pinkowski who arranged for this program.
With Carol Handlan presiding, Dottie Anderson installed two new members – Gary Gonsar, sponsored by John Fischer; and Gerald Stauffer, sponsored by Art Bowen.
