Selinsgrove Area Rotary Club
Vol. 93, No. 12 – President – Dan Mahoney – Editor – Carol Handlan
Next Meeting: October 1, 2020 – Our speaker will be Nicole Peterson, Food Security Coordinator of the Union-Snyder Community Action Agency. Kelly Feiler, host.
September 24, 2020: 19 Rotarians and (2) guests joined us for our social distant lunch meeting at SVCC. Host, Stacey Napoli, introduced Joanne Troutman, President and CEO of the Susquehanna Valley United Way (SVUW). We listened to how the SVUW has adjusted operations to cope with the COVID-19 pandemic and with funding from a number of different sources have been able to distribute over $800,000 in grants to nonprofit organizations and also to individuals to help pay their monthly bills; as funding of last resort known as braided funding. The SVUW, working in partnership with others has organized a number of distribution of PPE’s (gloves, hand sanitizer, gowns, human shields, disinfectant, and paper towels, Clorox wipes, etc). Because our area lacks sufficient broadband coverage, for internet access, the SVUW has worked with area businesses/libraries to expand their internet access, in the interim, to help those families/students with distance learning; as they continue to work on a resolution. In closing, she emphasized that we should all wear our masks, wash our hands and get a flu shot!! Marty Blessing shared September’s book selection, in the name of our speaker; The Room Where It Happens by John Bolton.
Announcements: 1) Dan acknowledged our speaker and guest, Chapin Jones. 2) Art shared an update on the golf ball drop and distributed tickets to those members who did not get them from the week before and also passed around two sign up sheets for those members who want to sell tickets at the Farmers’ Market or Smokers Express. 3) Dan mentioned that he still had tickets for the Rotary Dinner raffle; if anyone was interested to see him later. 4) Toby shared an article in this months Rotary Magazine. 5) Carol shared that the battery collection is over unless someone wants to step up and sponsor the next round. She and John S. sponsored the first two boxes. Carol also shared that Wes Knapp has contracted COVID-19 and has been bed ridden. Finally, Carol also asked for a show of hands for members who would be interested in a Rotary yard sale this fall on Rotary field. There was enough interest to move forward with holding one. 6) Earl shared that World Polio Day is coming up on October 24.
Sergeant at Arms: Marv Rudnitsky provided some humor and collected $31 in happy fines. Again, with social distancing, and masks being worn, I may have missed a few.
