JUNE 10, 2021: 20 fellow Rotarians and 1 guest (Tammy Engle) joined us at Isabella’s. Cheryl Stumpf introduced Dr. Jeff Mann and his wife Neneth who spoke on their involvement in humanitarian activities in the Philippines. Dr. Mann is a Professor of Religious Studies and Program Director of the GO Philippines at Susquehanna University and his wife Neneth is originally from the Philippines.  They shared their experiences and stories of life in the Philippines and how difficult life is for many there. Dr. Mann spoke about the GO program which started in 2005 with 6 students (Malcolm Derk and his now wife Erin participated) as a two-week service learning trip. Since then, he has made 13 trips with students. This study abroad program includes educational, service and recreational components oriented around cultural immersion in the Philippines. They distribute food, school supplies and other necessities and help build homes in the province of Batangas and the city of Manila. This specific study abroad to the Philippines follows a semester course on the history, culture, religion, language and cuisine of the Philippines. He referenced PLUS which stands for Philippines, Learning, Understanding and Service.  Neneth, is very involved and continues to collect and accept donations of toiletries and other non perishable items and ships them to the Philippines throughout the year.  If you wish to donate, you can contact Cheryl and she will see that the items are given to the Manns.
