March 9, 2017:  Twenty-six Rotarians and a guest (Shawn Felty of Sire Advertising) were present for a presentation about Girls on the Run by three participants – Cassidy Stumpf, Anna Piecuch, and Tanea Frazer. Cheryl Stumpf was the host. A Board Meeting preceded this meeting. At the Board Meeting it was determined that we will ask Shawn to upgrade and “modernize” the Club web presence. It was delightful to hear from Cassidy, Anna, and Tanea how important and meaningful their participation in Girls on the Run turned out to be – all three have stayed involved and credit it with helping them develop self-confidence and enabled how they live life now that they are in high school. Cheryl Stumpf started Girls on the Run 7 years ago with eight girls and it has grown to now involve 800 girls in 6 central PA counties. The organization now has a fulltime Executive Director. Forty percent of the participants are on scholarship assistance. This positive growth development program also includes a community impact component, and is for girls who are in 3rd to 8th grade.

March 2, 2017: A dozen or so Rotarians were present as we enjoyed lunch at Vinnie’s Italian Family Restaurant in Middleburg (located in the former Cole’s Hardware) followed by a tour of Shade Mountain Winery, conducted by Amy, the Zimmermann’s daughter. We got to see areas usually not seen by customers, including bottling of William’s Port, and meeting the winery white cat, a former stray. Needless to say, several of us took advantage of the opportunity to do some tasting and buying of wines. Started by Carl and Carolyn, now all four of their children are involved in the business, and it has grown substantially since the day when Rotarians first visited when it had only been open for a couple of years.  Do visit Vinnie’s – they have done a marvelous job renovating the facility, and the private room where we met would provide a nice atmosphere for lots of gatherings.  We will be rescheduling the tour at Timberhaven as they are anxious to have us visit and are most apologetic for the need to cancel today. Thanks to Toby for making the arrangements.

January 26, 2017:
With President Elect Toby Skinner and host Sarah Maneval presiding, approximately 50 Rotarians, Young Farmers, and guests were present at Christ Community Church for the annual Urban/Rural Night Dinner. Featured speaker was Elvin Stolfoos, President/Founder of Pikrite, along with VP of Finance and Operations, Kevin Baker. Elvin, one of 19 children, three of whom were adopted, worked with his father on the farm, and learned all about picking crops, especially tomatoes. He left school after the 8th grade at the request of his father in order to work on the farm. Pikrite was started in 1986, when the first tomato picker was built. Now a company that does business worldwide, there are spreaders (both manure and cinder), harvesters, tanks, dump trucks, leaf pickers designed and built by Pikrite. With 70 some employees and a specific vision and culture, the company values its employees and customers. Mr. Stolfoos was inspiring as he shared his personal philosophy – “take the time to value relationship” and the company motto – “ built to work the way you work.” The family continues to be involved in farming and selling grain. As always, the Busy Bees of the church provided an excellent chicken and waffle dinner appreciated by the attendees. Editor’s note: Jerry Rhoads would have approved of how the evening evolved.

January 12, 2017: Twenty-two Rotarians and guests (Erik Groes-Peterson) were present as Representative Fred Keller provided a legislative update. Wes Knapp was the host. In introducing Fred, Wes noted appreciation of Fred’s presence at many local area events. Fred spoke about state efforts on developing a budget, with agreement by the Governor and legislature, not to seek a personal income tax increase, despite need for increased revenue. He also noted the appropriations needed for this year for social services not covered in the budget. He believes this will be a year with much discussion about property taxes and potentially doing away with them. This would appear to have a negative impact on funds available for schools in areas like ours. Discussion and decisions are also needed about pension funds, with the state needing to keep its obligation to pensioners.  Legislation designed and proposed to reduce the size of the legislature will apparently be put forward again.  Reduction in the size of the legislature would reduce costs.  Interesting meeting for all in attendance.

A definite “labor of love” the project is in its 9th year and he is delighted to have help as he pursues this dream. Parts have had to be fabricated, sanded, and painted on this historic wooden plane he is building from “scratch.” He shared information about Bill Beyer, a now deceased WW2 pilot who had actually flown a Mustang and other planes in the war. A Board of Director’s meeting preceded. Of special note is that the Board voted to make a $100 donation to Far Point Collie Rescue in Jerry Rhoads memory. We are reminded how much Jerry would have enjoyed the topic of today’s program. Jerry’s service is at St Paul’s UCC on Saturday.

Quotation:   “America is the richest country in the world. And yet tonight, thousands of your neighbors will go to bed hungry. It may be your child’s schoolmate who is undernourished and has difficulty learning on an empty stomach. Or it could be a co-worker, a working mother whose low-wage job doesn’t make ends meet. Perhaps it’s an elderly neighbor who has to make a decision whether to delay filling a prescription or buying groceries. The faces of hunger are a broad as the faces of America.”  David Nasby, General Mills

Jennifer who has been employed at the library since 2008, is obviously delighted with the range of programs and services that can now be offered in the renovated facility. Statewide, libraries are thinking of themselves as community centers, and they provide programs from new mothers and babies to senior citizens, with increasing emphasis on after school programs, and working with “tweens” to encourage communication and literacy. A new program through a statewide effort is “cruise into kindergarten” which is designed to increase radiness for school for those who have not attend a pre-school program. Food for Thought, Mai-Jung, and soon, scrabble, are part of the adult program. Charlie is the only male member of the Friends of the Library board. This is a group that is a major fund raising source, sponsoring things like the Art and Wine Evening (10/1/16), Tree Fest, book sales, etc. There is much to be proud of about the Library and its role in the community.

It was interesting to learn the history of the development of credit cards (with magnetic strips that are “fixed” and provide ones name, address, SSN, credit card number and is responsible for about 8 billion in fraud annually in the USA). The idea of the Eurochip is that it changes after each transaction and, especially once the pin is fully implemented, will prevent current forms of fraud. Art is also a motivational speaker and has been involved with Dale Carnegie program which urges one to “think outside the box.”

Aug. 4, 2016: What a wonderful evening at Rotary Field where Rotarians, partners, present and past campers, campers families, guests and donors numbering over 200 people, celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Summer SEALS Day Camp. The Camp, a partnership with the Club, the Selinsgrove Area School District, Susquehanna University Education Department and the Selinsgrove Area Community Foundation, provides a six week summer program for selected rising 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders. A slide show by Mike Piecuch provided wonderful background, with music provided by Drew Kelly as guests gathered for the event. A special video done by Steve Paterson was well received and will be posted on the summer SEALS web site. Kendra Aucker, CEO/President of the Evangelical Community Hospital provided a wonderful keynote address. Michael Hayes, President of the Board, and Dottie Anderson, Secretary, thanks all who have been involved in the program during the 10 year period.  Rotarians Ken Miller, Tom Gates, Marv Rudnitsky and Dottie Anderson were involved in the development of the camp in 2007, and it is these discussions that led to the partnership with the University and the School District. Mike Flock and John Bickhart have annually done the camper trip to Flock Pond that is always a highlight for the campers. Called back from enjoying the bouncy house and the slushies, the campers were introduced and enjoyed sharing information about this summers’ units – Dinosaurs, weather, and the Olympics – showing the crafts that accompanied the units and talking about the field trips.  The 5th graders received “graduation certificates” after a showing of Brittany Bunting Specht’s slide show featuring the camps activities.  Those of us on the camp board (Michael Hayes, Mike Piecuch, Mike Coyne, Toby Skinner, Patti Miller, Marty Blessing, George Cravitz, and David McLaughlin) is so grateful for all of the event sponsors and effort by committee member for the event in making it happen.  Susquehanna staff Liz Grove and Brenda Mull were essential in making the event a success.  Saying thank you to all for their support, both for the event and over the years could take a book!  Our goal for the evening was to acquaint a wider community group with the nature of the program and its successes and challenges – goal accomplished!
