Jan. 27, 2011: Sixty plus Rotarians, Young Farmers, partners and guests were present for Urban/Rural Night Chicken and Waffle Dinner at Christ Community Church.  Jerry Rhoads made arrangements for the event, with Charlie Benner arranging the program. Among the guests present were Bob and Carol Corman. Carol is the Regional VP and President Elect of the National Young Farmers organization. John Stokinger shared a bit about the history of the Selinsgrove Rotary Club and Bob Soper shared information about the history of urban/rural night first held in 1951.  The speaker was Thomas B. Murphy, Co-Director Marcellus Center for Outreach and Research and Extension Educator, Energy Development from Cooperative Extension, College of Agriculture, the Penn State University. Mr. Murphy spoke about the Marcellus Resource and its impact on Pennsylvania. This was an extremely interesting and informative presentation about both the positives and the risks in developing this form of alternative energy. It is projected that Pennsylvania will become and energy exporter within the next two year. There are 72 different companies operating in PA. Areas of concern include methane migration and surface leaks. New regulations go into effect in early February, raising the standards concerning water.  Informative websites are: www.marcellus.psu.edu and www.naturalgas.psu.edu.

Announcements: President John Stokinger told attendees that Jack Rousch has fallen and broken a hip and is in Evangelical Hospital.*Club will meet at BJ’s the 1st two weeks in February while kitchen at SVCC continues to undergo renovations.**Mimi Rice is looking for host families for 12 students (10 women, 2 men) from Japan who will be attending the Spring Senshu English Program from Jan. 29 to Mar. 19. If you are interested, contact Mimi at the Office of Event Management, 372-4354, or at home 523-0126, or via e-mail at mrice@susqu.edu. ***The Distinguished Service Award, given annually to a non-Rotarian, will be presented on Thursday, April 14. Please send nominations (a one page letter stating your reasons for recommending the person or organization) to Joyce Anderson, 41 Greenbrier Ave., Selinsgrove, PA. 17870 by March 1st. Recipients must live or work in the Selinsgrove area and have demonstrated community and charitable service.

Feb. 24 – Ron “Buddy” Knoebel, of Knoebels Groves will be the speaker. Bill Clark hosts. SVCC, 11:45 a.m.
