July 12, 2018: Twenty-three Rotarians and guest Krista Summers were in attendance to hear Ian Snyder, the Volunteer Director of the Refuge, a youth services program in Sunbury describe the work of the organization. Don and Krista Summers were the hosts. A board meeting preceded. Don Summers introduced the speaker. Ian is a life-long resident of Sunbury and currently a teacher at Northumberland Christian Academy. The Refuge has been around approximately 6 years and is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) Christian Youth Center located in Sunbury. The Refuge provides a safe place and staple environment for at risk kids and provides them an opportunity to leave the “tough things” in life they are dealing with behind. Volunteers from eight churches are involved in helping run their programs. They receive no formal funding and depend solely on donations. The Refuge, seeks to share Jesus with the kids through relational ministry. Kids range from 6th through 12th grades and do not have to pay for any programing or meals. On Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30pm-5:00pm they have homework/tutoring and then dinner is served at 5:30pm. They have had as many as 80 kids participate. During the summer when there is no school, they work on STEM activities and also, do carpentry, sewing, welding, etc. The Refuge is certainly fulfilling a need in the Sunbury community and would welcome additional volunteers.
